Brookstone 10X/1X Natural Light Makeup Mirror Review

Published: 4/15/10

I ordered my Brookstone 10X/1X Natural Light Makeup Mirror on their web site. It was back ordered and took nearly a month to receive it. Once it reached my doorstep I was glad to see it was double boxed unlike other retailers. This is good if you intend to give the mirror as a gift. The retail box was pristine and well protected during shipping.

I did a lot of research before settling with this mirror. It had everything I was looking for but the price. It's very expensive for a mirror. I thought $40 was expensive but $130 is ridiculously insane. In the end I really had no other option. There are two categories of mirrors in the market today: junk mirrors and the really expensive mirrors. There are no bargain mirrors to be found unfortunately.

Despite the initial heart attack from seeing the price this mirror from Brookstone is a great mirror and perhaps better looking in person than online. It's well built and when you hold it you can feel it's pretty sturdy. It certainly is a big mirror and stands at eighteen inches high. It's about the right height where you can sit down and not be looking down on the mirror. The mirror head is 9" in diameter while the mirror itself is 6.5" in diameter for both 1X and 10X side. The construction is of brushed stainless steel with clear coat applied on the surface for a smooth finish.

The mirrors are good but shows slight distortion on the 1X side when you move away from the mirror. This could be caused by the way the mirror is glued on the diffuser. At this price range I really expected perfection.

The diffuser is my favorite part. It's constructed of thick plastic with a frosted texture to aid in diffusing the light. It's about 1" wide all around. It looks really nice. Most light mirrors you'll see have the diffuser integral to the mirror and only 3/4" wide around. The only other mirror I've seen with nice looking diffusers is from Rialto.

Of considerable note is the width of the head which is only 2" deep and helps reduce the overall bulk of the mirror. It's also beveled and esthetically pleasing. The top and bottom have vents to allow heat from the 22 watt circular fluorescent light bulb to escape. It doesn't get hot but only warm.
